Instead of relying on external high-availability tools (like\nPatroni, repmgr, or Stolon), it integrates directly with the Kubernetes API to\nautomate database operations that a skilled DBA would perform manually.\n\nKey design decisions include:\n\n- Direct integration with Kubernetes API: The PostgreSQL cluster’s status is\n  available directly in the `Cluster` resource, allowing users to inspect it\n  via the Kubernetes API.\n- Operator pattern: The operator ensures that the desired PostgreSQL state is\n  reconciled automatically, following Kubernetes best practices.\n- Immutable application containers: Updates follow an immutable infrastructure\n  model, as explained in\n  [\"Why EDB Chose Immutable Application Containers\"](https:\u002F\u002Fwww.enterprisedb.com\u002Fblog\u002Fwhy-edb-chose-immutable-application-containers).\n\n### How CloudNativePG Works\n\nThe operator continuously monitors and updates the PostgreSQL cluster state.\nExamples of automated actions include:\n\n- Failover management: If the primary instance fails, the operator elects a new\n  primary, updates the cluster status, and orchestrates the transition.\n- Scaling read replicas: When the number of desired replicas changes, the\n  operator provisions or removes resources such as persistent volumes, secrets,\n  and config maps while managing streaming replication.\n- Service updates: Kubernetes remains the single source of truth, ensuring\n  that PostgreSQL service endpoints are always up to date.\n- Rolling updates: When an image is updated, the operator follows a rolling\n  strategy—first updating replica pods before performing a controlled\n  switchover for the primary.\n\nCloudNativePG manages additional Kubernetes resources to enhance PostgreSQL\nmanagement, including: `Backup`, `ClusterImageCatalog`, `Database`,\n`ImageCatalog`, `Pooler`, `Publication`, `ScheduledBackup`, and `Subscription`.\n\n## Out of Scope\n\n- **Kubernetes only:** CloudNativePG is dedicated to vanilla Kubernetes\n  maintained by the [Cloud Native Computing Foundation\n  (CNCF)](https:\u002F\u002Fkubernetes.io\u002F).\n- **PostgreSQL only:** CloudNativePG is dedicated to vanilla PostgreSQL\n  maintained by the [PostgreSQL Global Development Group\n  (PGDG)](https:\u002F\u002Fwww.postgresql.org\u002Fabout\u002F).\n- **No support for forks:** Features from PostgreSQL forks will only be\n  considered if they can be integrated as extensions or pluggable frameworks.\n- **Not a general-purpose database operator:** CloudNativePG does not support\n  other databases (e.g., MariaDB).\n\nCloudNativePG can be extended via the [CNPG-I plugin interface](https:\u002F\u002Fgithub.com\u002Fcloudnative-pg\u002Fcnpg-i).\n\n## Communications\n\nPlease refer to the [Getting in touch](https:\u002F\u002Fgithub.com\u002Fcloudnative-pg#getting-in-touch)\nsection on the GitHub organization page.\n\n## Community Meetings\n\nEveryone is welcome, no invitation needed.
